Mary Makes a Move–for Murphy.
Simsbury First Selectman Mary Glassman made an early endorsement of Representative Chris Murphy’s burbling bid for the 2012 Democratic nomination for the United States Senate, according to The Hartford Courant. Murphy in the Senate race would mean an open seat in the 5th Congressional District.
Glassman, who tired to ride a passion for bike trails to the governorship and lieutenant governorship last year, is thought to be hankering for another shot at office beyond the cozy confines of affluent Simsbury. If the chronic candidate runs for re-election in Simsbury and then launches a run for Congress in 2012, that would make 7 campaigns in 6 years, which means in her own parlance, she’s not fresh. The Baroness of Bike Trails would likely run into some quiet but effective opposition from allies of popular Democratic Lieutenant Governor Nancy Wyman, who buried Glassman in last August’s statewide Democratic primary.
Glassman could have even more trouble than she did in 2010 finding convention delegates to support a congressional candidacy. She may also face questions about her role in running-mate Ned Lamont’s accusations of racism against primary and general election winner Stop-Calling-Me-Dan Malloy. Democratic loyalists won’t forget Glassman’s heavy-handed attempt to portray Wyman as an aging relic in contrast to the 52 year old Glassman’s notion of her own charm.
Of course, Simsbury would still have to be in the 5th after reapportionment for Glassman to make the race.

If Simsbury was taken out of the 5th Congressional district, everyone would know who on the Reapportionment committee was behind it….
Kevin, you’re better than this blog. Mary endorses a candidate for Senate so there must be a conspiracy theory? It’s a natural that she would endorse Murphy. He has been to Simsbury more in his 4+ years as a congressman than his Republican predecessor did in her 24 years of service. What’s your beef with Glassman? Is it she consistently pulls huge numbers against your tired GOP cronies as a Democrat in a Republican town? Or, are you still stinging from staking out her house last year in your Audi and taking down the license plate numbers of her friends discussing her future options and not breaking the story? Mary has served Simsbury extremely well and would be an asset to the state. She championed ‘regionalism’ before your paper deemed it cool and passed consecutive budgets with negative or zero spending increases. That is the definition of a true leader if you ask me.
Is a loser. Make that 7 times a loser.
This is just part of the yuppies v. party hack division in CT 5. In Cheshire a highly respected former legislator, Elizabeth Esty, was told to get lost by Donovan & Gaffey’s Meriden allies, who had already decided to anoint a geriatric union lackey as Gaffey’s successor in the 13th District.
One would think the Democratic party establishment had a problem with well educated suburban women who can get Republican votes. If so, said types of voters will have a problem with the Democratic party. It’s not like they have that great a margin for error in the 5th.
Respected by who? Her constituents, who revoked her parking privileges after one term? Democrats in general, who she made a habit of tut-tutting as too liberal from the perch of a freshman legislator? Or is there some other group that you had in mind?
Esty lost due to the death penalty. Period. End of story. Still ran way ahead of Malloy in Cheshire.
As for the tut-tutting, you are aware Malloy lost a 10 point lead and needed Presidential intervention to eke out a win. Maybe there is a market out there for fiscal realism..
I’m not carrying any brief for Malloy either, that’s for damn sure. Just saying that if Etsy was looking to advance through the ranks, she needed to have a little more “realism” in how she went about it.
Blame the delegates for their shortsightedness in not appreciating her greatness while she was taking a dump on the party all you want — it was just never in the cards.
I’m sure the folks at the White Star Line who complained about insufficient lifeboats had some short term career setbacks
If Esty thinks so little of her party, she should find a different one. She might even be a better than average Republican instead of an irritating, defective Democrat.
Well if the CT Democrats really want to emulate the pre-Blair UK Labour Party I can’t stop them
