The Republican endorsed nominee for attorney general, Martha Dean, sounds like she’s running for defender of the faith. That job, at least for the Episcopalians among us, is taken, and, mercifully, not the subject of a political party competition. Good heavens, Dean’s website features a lot of religious talk. I’m an agnostic in the race for the party’s nomination, which will be decided in an August 10th primary. All this talk of religion in politics makes me uneasy, especially this Dean pronouncement:
“The Judeo-Christian values teach tolerance for others, a higher duty owed to God’s law when it conflicts with the laws of government, and the importance of private acts of compassion.”
Agreeing on what is God’s law has vexed the world for centuries. We do know that there are a lot of pronouncements in the Bible that conflict with life in a 21st century secular society, or even a 19th century one. A Dean victory would be good news for any red heifer, which would certainly be seen as a member of a protected class in what sounds like a Dean theocracy. Adam Lambert, however, should be a little nervous about any gigs in Connecticut. Some idolatry would be in, other displays would be out.
Oy-yoy-yoy, this is not the Connecticut way.

Perhaps the greatest gift that Susan Bysiewicz gave to the Democrats was delaying Ross Garber’s entry into the race for the Republican nomination . If Ross wins the primary, the general election will be a true contest (assuming he can convince media outlets to stop saying the words “John Rowland” every time they mention his name). If Dean wins, the general election will be over before it begins.
