Good Neighbors: Busy Day for New Yorkers at Danbury Fair Mall.

The first Saturday of commerce since mid-March brought shoppers back to the Danbury Fair Mall. Vehicles from New York and some from New Jersey were thick on the ground in the mall parking lot. New Yorkers from neighboring Rockland County comprise a hefty share of the mall’s patrons—and sales tax payers.

There are no restrictions on the number or age of out-of-state patrons visiting Danbury Fair Mall or any other retail establishment in the state. Through the pandemic, Connecticut has been more receptive to and cooperative with bordering states than Rhode Island’s duplicitous governor, Gina Raimondo. Early in the public health crisis the issued an executive order requiring New Yorkers in the state to self-quarantine for 14 days, whether or not they had symptoms of the unique coronavirus. Raimondo deployed state troopers to the Connecticut border to enforce her order against New Yorkers. The Democratic venture capitalist retreated a day later, after a phone call from New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont has been less successful dealing with Raimondo, who briefly served as national co-chair of Michael Bloomberg’s billion dollar foray into presidential politics. Raimondo, according to Lamont, persuaded him to order the delay the opening of salons and barbershops less than 48 hours before they were to begin serving customers on May 20th.

Raimondo announced on May 22nd that Rhode Island would begin to allow some indoor restaurant dining on June 1st. Lamont had announced Connecticut restaurants could expand their service to limited indoor dining on June 10th. Raimondo has eviscerated interstate cooperation in lifting restrictions on economic activity, though Lamont may be reluctant to recognize his trust has been misplaced.

Marcus Brown Wins 22nd District Endorsement Over Incumbent Marilyn Moore.

State Senator Marilyn Moore’s political odyssey continues. Moore lost renomination from her Bridgeport-Trumbull district to challenger Marcus Brown by a wide margin. The two will meet in an August 11th primary.

Moore nearly defeated Joseph Ganim, Bridgeport’s incumbent Democratic mayor, in a September primary last year. A signature snafu precluded Moore from advancing to the fall corners as the Working Families Party nominee.

Brown serves as President Pro Tem of the Bridgeport city council. He was nominated by former state SenatorAnthony Musto, who Moore defeated To win her first Term in the Senate.

McConnell Favors Bankruptcy Over Aid To Strapped States. Connecticut Makes Longevity Payments This Week.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) told talk radio host Hugh Hewitt that “he favors allowing states struggling with high public employee pension costs amid the burdens of the pandemic response to declare bankruptcy rather than giving them a federal bailout,” according to a Bloomberg report.

Hewitt pointed to California, Illinois, and Connecticut as high pension obligation states that may need federal money as the Covid-19 pandemic increases expenses while revenues decline. McConnell said bankruptcy protection has “saved some cities” and allowed them to address long term deficits.

Connecticut will see a budget deficit of several hundred million dollars this year, but the state’s finances are robust enough to make longevity payments to state employees this week.

Sullivan Holds Big Fundraising Lead in 5th CD Contest. Meehan Lags Behind Hyde.

Retired federal prosecutor David X. Sullivan has built a commanding lead over rival candidates for the 5th CD Republican nomination to face first term incumbent Democrat Jahana Hayes. Sullivan reported at the end of the first quarter of the year raising around $135,000.

Bizarre hopeful Robert Hyde, of Simsbury and the bar at the DC Trump hotel, has raised a few dollars shy of $25,000. That’s a couple of thousand dollars more than Ryan Meehan, recently of Texas and Greenwich, who recently moved into the district to make the race. Meehan’s poor fundraising will come as a disappointment to his campaign consultants. A fourth candidate, Ruben Rodriguez, a Waterbury Republican, has raised less than $4,000.

The unique coronavirus has halted traditional campaigning and fundraising. Town committees meet by phone or internet, if at all. Delegates are unavailable for the usual get-together with eager candidates. Glad-handing is verboten. Delegate isolating is especially hard for candidates who entered the race late, like Meehan, though will be a mercy for Hyde and party activists who want to avoid him.

Delegates will meet by some means in May to pick an endorsed candidate.

Lamont Thanks Tong Target for Medicine Donation.

Governor Ned Lamont Thursday thanked Amneal Pharmaceuticals for donating 400,000 tablets of hydroxychloroquine for distribution to state hospitals. “Making sure that medical facilities have the resources they need to treat patients who are in dire need of our support is an absolute priority. I want to thank Amneal Pharmaceuticals for their generous donation, along with DCP, and the Connecticut Hospital Association for working to ensure this medication goes to the right place. What we’re going through is unprecedented, and it will continue to take public-private partnerships like this to get through it,” Lamont said, according to Fox 61.

Amneal is a defendant in a price-fixing lawsuit against generic drug manufacturers filed last year by Attorney General William Tong.

Hydroxychlorine, a drug used to treat malaria and autoimmune diseases, has been approved by the FDA for use on patients hospitalized with COVID-19. It has been championed by Donald Trump. Doctors on the frontlines have expressed doubts about the drug’s effectiveness.

Judge Bellis’ Revenge. Bridgeport Investigation Stems from 2017 Absentee Ballot Trials.

Judge Barbara Bellis kept her word. The Superior Court judge presided over a controversy arising from an extended 2017 Bridgeport city council primary. Absentee ballot manipulations caused the Democratic primary for the 133rd Council District to be held three times.

During the extended proceedings, Bellis announced that her ruling would be sent to elections administrators and law enforcement officials. She did and FBI agents have made inquiries about absentee ballot practices in Bridgeport, Daily Ructions has learned.

The absentee ballot investigation appears to have expanded into other areas of Bridgeport politics. The story was first reported Saturday by Only in Bridgeport and included considerable detail. It included a geshrai of pain from first term state Senator Dennis Bradley, who is feeling the business end of a federal investigation. Investigations of Bradley’s campaign finance practices are also pending at the State Elections Enforcement Commission.

The cases continue.
